FAQ

HEN: Black head, Purple breast, Silver Back
  • Where is Fantastic Finches located?
    • We are located in North-Central, Florida near Ocala.
  • Do you ship?
    • The short answer is No. But we may make exceptions for larger orders of birds. We only ship through airlines, not USPS and we are not located close to an airport. Therefore, we must have enough birds going out in an order to justify a trip to the airport. Contact us via email or on Facebook if you have more questions about shipping.
  • Will you hold a bird for me?
    • Yes. We may ask for a small deposit to hold your bird for any length of time over a week.
  • Do you sell uncolored juveniles?
    • Typically, No. The first molt is very stressful on young Gouldians. We do not like to add more stress by selling them during this time. Also, we like to wait till our birds have matured so that we can evaluate their type and quality for addition to our show or breeding stock. If you are interested in a certain color and we have it available in a juvenile, we can hold the bird for you until the molt is complete. A deposit may be required to hold birds for an extended length of time
  • Do you have a waiting list?
    • Yes. If there is a specific mutation you desire that we do not have available, we will add you to our waitlist and you will be notified when we do have one available. Please be aware we don’t breed in huge numbers and can not predict when we might have a specific bird available. Visit our waiting list here.
  • How much do your birds cost?
    • Prices for Gouldians start around $55 and go up from there depending on color mutation and quality of bird. If you would like pricing on a specific bird, please contact us via email or on Facebook.
  • Are you licensed?
    • Yes, we are licensed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as required to sell Class III non-native wildlife in the State of Florida. Our license can be presented upon request. Being a licensed breeder means Florida law requires that when you purchase a bird from us, we need your name, address and phone number for our records. We do not give this information away, it is just kept for our license requirements.
  • What seed are your birds on?
    • Our birds are fed Higgins Vita-Seed, Kaytee Supreme seed and Zupreem Fruit Blend Finch pellets year round. They are also offered dried egg food and other supplements as needed. All birds get fresh greens and chop several times a week.
  • Do you colony breed?
    • No, our pairs are carefully selected from our flock according to health and color. We put a lot of thought into what birds make the best pair. We keep careful records to be sure we are not breeding related birds or breeding colors that do not do well together. When the birds are not breeding, they are separated by sex in large flight cages so they can rest and have room to fly.
  • Can I visit your aviary?
    • No. For the safety of our birds and other pets we do not allow visitors into our aviary. We will be happy to bring the bird or a selection of birds to a safe, agreed upon meeting point. If you don’t live in our area, we are willing to travel a bit to meet our buyers. Also, we occasionally travel around the state to Orlando, Tampa, Brooksville, Jacksonville, etc and could bring your birds with us. We usually attend all Orlando and Plant City shows as well as NFSS shows held throughout the state.
  • How do I know how old my bird is?
    • We keep accurate records of all hatch dates, parentage and medical treatments. We don’t currently use closed bands, which show the year the bird was born, though we may in the near future.
  • Do you speak Spanish?   ¿Hablas español?
    • Si! Se habla español!
  • What are all the letters you use to describe color, I don’t understand?
    • We use a two-letter system to abbreviate the color mutations. The letters identify the color of the head, breast and back, in that order. For a more-detailed explanation, check out the chart at the bottom of our Breeding Stock page.
